Alpe d'Huez ski lifts: the complete guide

By 21th July 2026 July 22nd, 2026No Comments

When planning a holiday in Alpe d'Huez, people generally focus on the ski area, choosing accommodation, or the slopes best suited to their skill level. However, one element plays an equally important role in the success of the trip: the ski lifts.

Unlike many stations, they are not only used for ascending to higher altitudes. Some have become genuine means of urban transport, allowing for quick travel between different neighborhoods, access to shops, or reaching the slopes without needing to use a car.

For a holidaymaker discovering Alpe d'Huez, this may seem confusing.

  • Should we use the Télécentre or the Alpe Express?
  • What is the difference between a free lift and a lift in the ski area?
  • From my apartment, what is the fastest way to get to the slopes?

All these questions come up regularly with our teams.

Thanks to our year-round presence in Alpe d'Huez, we assist several thousand travelers each season. We know the traffic patterns in the resort, the shortcuts that new visitors often overlook, and the routes that save valuable time.

The aim of this guide is therefore simple: to enable you to quickly understand how the ski lifts work so that you can fully enjoy your stay, whether you come to ski, hike or simply discover the mountains.

Why is this guide different?

Most websites provide a list of ski lifts. This guide goes much further.

We are going to answer some very specific questions:

  • Which lift should you use depending on your neighborhood?
  • What is the best access to the slopes?
  • Where to ride with children?
  • How to avoid carrying skis for several hundred meters?
  • Which residence should you choose if you want to do everything on foot?
  • Which route is the easiest for a beginner?

In other words, we do not just describe the lifts: we explain how to use them intelligently.

Understanding the ski lifts of Alpe d'Huez

Before going into detail, it is important to understand that not all feeds have the same function.

In Alpe d'Huez, three main categories are distinguished.

1. Urban lifts

These are the lifts used to get around the resort. They allow you to connect the different areas without a car and to quickly access the snow fronts.

In winter, the three urban lifts are free for pedestrians:

  • Telecentre
  • Alpe Express
  • Huez Express

They complement the free shuttle network and facilitate daily travel within the resort.

The Homency Council

Many travelers only discover these lifts on the second or third day of their vacation. However, using them upon arrival can save you several kilometers of walking during the week.

2. The ski lifts in the ski area

These lifts provide access to the different sectors of the resort.

For example:

  • DMC
  • marmots
  • Signal
  • Games
  • White Woodpecker
  • Rif Nel

They require a ski pass or a suitable pass depending on the season.

3. The ski lifts open in summer

Part of the network remains open during the summer season.

These lifts allow:

  • to access the starting points of hikes;
  • to join the mountain bike routes;
  • to enjoy the views without skiing.

Some urban lifts, such as the Alpe Express and the Huez Express, also continue to provide connections between neighborhoods during the summer.

Why feedback is essential when choosing accommodation

This is probably the most underestimated point by travelers.

Many people choose their apartment based solely on its distance from the slopes. In reality, two properties located at the same distance can offer a completely different experience.

Let's take two examples

Apartment A

  • 250 meters from the slopes
  • significant rise
  • portable skis
  • snowy sidewalks

Apartment B

  • 450 meters from the slopes
  • Alpe Express nearby
  • direct access to the snow front
  • no special effort

On paper, the first one seems better positioned.

In practice, most families will prefer the second option. That's precisely why, at Homency, we always talk about the actual journey and not just the distance.

The three free ski lifts at the resort

One of Alpe d'Huez's great assets is that it offers a genuine cable transport network.

In winter, three lifts are accessible free of charge to facilitate pedestrian travel:

  • Telecentre
  • Alpe Express
  • Huez Express

These facilities allow for quick connections between the main districts and the ski slopes without needing to use a car. They complement the resort's free shuttle buses.

The Télécentre: the essential lift in the heart of Alpe d'Huez

If you only had to know one ski lift before arriving in Alpe d'Huez, it would probably be the Télécentre.

Much more than just a lift, it forms a true link between the historic heart of the resort and the Grandes Rousses snow front. Every winter, thousands of holidaymakers use it daily to reach the slopes without having to carry their equipment for several hundred meters.

For travelers staying in the Vieil Alpe, the Games district or certain residences in the center, the Telecentre completely changes the holiday experience.

At Homency, this is one of the lifts we most often recommend to travelers discovering the resort.

Where is the Telecentre located?

The Télécentre connects two major sectors of Alpe d'Huez.

The lower station

Located in the heart of the resort, in the immediate vicinity of the Avenue des Jeux and the district of Vieil Alpe.

From this station, it is possible to reach the following in a few minutes:

  • shops;
  • restaurants;
  • ski rentals;
  • residences in the centre;
  • the Tourist Office;
  • AgoraLP;
  • most of the parking lots in the city center.

This is generally the starting point used by travelers staying in historic districts.

The upper station

It leads directly to the Grandes Rousses snow front.

In just a few dozen meters, you will reach:

  • the ticket offices for the ski lifts;
  • the main departure points for ski lifts;
  • several ESF gatherings;
  • kindergartens;
  • mountain restaurants located at the start of the slopes.

For many families, this arrival is much more convenient than a long walk with skis.

Why is the Telecentre so convenient?

Many resorts have a gondola lift. Few have a lift designed primarily to simplify the daily lives of holidaymakers.

The Telecentre eliminates what is often the least enjoyable part of a ski day: carrying skis.

When travelling with two children, several pairs of skis, uncomfortable shoes, a stroller or bags, a few hundred metres can quickly seem very long.

Thanks to the Telecentre, these journeys become much simpler.

The travellers who benefit most from the Telecentre

Families

It is probably the public who appreciate this comeback the most.

In the morning, there's no need to make children walk for long in ski boots. In just a few minutes, they can reach the slopes while remaining much less tired.

In the evening, after several hours on skis, the return is just as pleasant.

Beginners

When you are new to skiing, carrying the skis is often more difficult than the descent itself.

The Telecentre allows you to arrive directly in an area suitable for learning without having to cross the entire station.

The elderly

Reducing walking trips provides a real comfort.

Access is simple and limits the sometimes slippery sections of the centre of the station.

The groups

When a group is carrying multiple bags, children, or equipment, avoiding a long walk greatly improves the organization of the day.

Which Homency residences particularly benefit from the Telecentre?

At Homency, several properties directly benefit from this proximity.

Among the main residences:

  • The Farms of the Alps
  • Housewife
  • some accommodations of the Vieil Alpe ;
  • several apartments located on Avenue des Jeux.

For these accommodations, we often advise travelers that the Telecentre is the easiest way to reach the slopes.

How much time is actually saved?

It's difficult to measure precisely, because everything depends on:

  • of the exact location of your apartment;
  • of your level;
  • of your equipment;
  • of the weather.

However, one thing is certain: over a full week, using the Telecentre often saves several kilometers of walking. For a family, this represents a very significant convenience.

Telecentre or walking departure point?

This is a question we are asked very often.

The answer depends mainly on your accommodation. If you are staying in the immediate vicinity of the slopes, going directly to the slopes is obviously the quickest solution.

On the other hand, for many apartments located in the historic centre, the Telecentre becomes more efficient than walking.

At Homency, we always advise the simplest route, not the one that looks the shortest on a map.

The most common mistakes

Waiting unnecessarily for the first morning

Many travelers hesitate to use the Télécentre upon arrival. They choose to walk to the slopes before discovering a few days later that the lift saved them considerable time.

Choosing your apartment solely based on distance

Two apartments can be located 400 meters from the slopes.

One will require a significant climb, the other will be served by the Telecentre.

The experience will be completely different.

Underestimating the return

We're always motivated in the morning.

In the evening, after six hours of skiing, the Télécentre often becomes the best friend of vacationers.

The Homency Council

When we help a traveler choose their accommodation, we rarely look solely at the distance to the slopes.

We are studying the actual route, that is to say the journey he will have to make each morning with his skis, his children, his equipment or his shopping.

In many cases, an apartment located close to the Telecentre will offer a much more comfortable stay than accommodation slightly closer to the slopes but requiring a long walk.

That is why we regularly recommend the Telecentre to families, beginners and travellers who wish to fully enjoy their holidays without making unnecessary trips.

Tips

The Telecentre is not only useful to skiers.

It also provides a practical solution for pedestrians wishing to reach the snow front to enjoy the atmosphere of the resort, accompany relatives or access restaurants located near the slopes.

The Alpe Express: the lift that changed how people get around the resort

For a long time, the Éclose area was considered a district somewhat removed from the main slopes. Travelers often had to walk several minutes with their equipment or take shuttle buses to reach the snow front.

The arrival of the Alpe Express profoundly changed this organization.

Today, this cable car has become one of the most used transport routes in the resort. It allows for quick connections between several strategic areas of Alpe d'Huez while facilitating access to the ski area.

For travellers staying in the Éclose, Bergers or certain recent residences areas, it represents a real gain in daily comfort.

At Homency, we even consider the Alpe Express to be one of the most important lifts when choosing your accommodation.

Where is the Alpe Express located?

The Alpe Express connects the Éclose district to the Bergers sector and the snow front.

Today, it constitutes one of the main means of transport between:

  • the Éclose district;
  • the Shepherds' sector;
  • several recent residences;
  • the ski area.

Thanks to this connection, travelers can quickly reach the slopes without having to walk long distances.

Why is this lift so popular?

Alpe d'Huez has developed a lot in recent years.

The new high-end residences have mainly been built around the Éclose.

These accommodations offer:

  • more space;
  • garages;
  • modern services;
  • better insulation;
  • large balconies;
  • wellness areas for some residences.

Without the Alpe Express, these accommodations would be significantly less convenient for reaching the slopes.

The cable car therefore provides them with real added value.

A lift designed for holidaymakers

Unlike some lifts exclusively for skiers, the Alpe Express is used all day.

She permits :

  • to go skiing;
  • to go back to the apartment for lunch;
  • to join the shops;
  • to meet up with friends in another neighborhood;
  • to get around easily without using a car.

It is this versatility that explains its success.

Which neighborhoods are affected?

The Hatch

This is obviously the neighborhood that benefits the most from this recovery.

The residences located around the Alpe Express benefit from quick access to the ski area while maintaining a relatively quiet environment.

This allows travelers to reach the slopes in minutes without having to cross the entire resort.

The Shepherds

From Les Bergers, the Alpe Express also facilitates travel to L'Éclose.

Travelers can enjoy shops, restaurants or reach their accommodation much more easily.

The center of the station

Although the Télécentre is often more suitable for accommodations located in the heart of the village, the Alpe Express is an excellent alternative for certain routes.

The best-located Homency residences

Several Homency properties are directly benefiting from this increase.

Among the main residences:

Expression Residence

One of the best examples. The residence is located just steps from the Alpe Express train station. For families, this is a considerable advantage.

The Farms of the Alps

Since Vieil AlpeSeveral routes are possible. Depending on the exact accommodation, the Alpe Express can be an excellent alternative to the Télécentre.

The limits of the Alpe Express

Like any ascent, it also has some limitations.

  • It can be busier during peak hours, particularly between 8:45 and 9:30 during school holidays.
  • Depending on the accommodation, a few minutes' walk may still be necessary to reach the train station.
  • Finally, some travellers prefer to leave directly with their skis on when possible.

Alpe Express or Télécentre?

This is probably the question we get asked most often.

In reality, there is no single best lift. The right choice is therefore the one that suits your residence.

The mistakes we observe most often

Absolutely wanting to reach the slopes on foot

Some holidaymakers think they are saving time. In reality, they often arrive more tired than those who use the Alpe Express.

To think that L'Éclose is far from the slopes

This was sometimes true several years ago. Today, thanks to the Alpe Express, this area benefits from particularly convenient access to the ski area.

Choose a residence solely based on the "ski-in/ski-out" criterion

An apartment located in the immediate vicinity of the Alpe Express can offer superior daily comfort to accommodation advertised as ski-in/ski-out but less well laid out or far from shops.

The Homency Council

When we assist a traveler in choosing their accommodation, we don't just look at the distance to the slopes.

We analyze the real-time travel time to reach the ski area, the ease of travel with children, nearby shops and the group's lifestyle.

For many families, residences near the Alpe Express now represent one of the best compromises between comfort, modernity and quick access to the slopes.

Tips

The Alpe Express is not only useful in winter. In summer, it also facilitates travel between the different areas of the resort and provides easier access to hiking trails, shops and activities, without having to use your car.
